Vicki spent her final days surrounded by family.
She was preceded by her husband, Carey; her parents, James and Moira Simm; parents-in-law, Norman and Joyce Hunter; and her nephews, Samuel Simm and Tim McKelvey.
She was loved by her many siblings, Jim (Heather), Donna, Norman (Monique), and Ted (Amber), and by her siblings-in-law, Corinne (Kevin) and Curtis (Helen). She was blessed with many nieces and nephews: Aaron, Colin, Ava, George, Henry, Kate-Lyn, Kristen, Stacie, and Dylan. She will be missed by her uncle, Keith (Gayle), and her stepmother-in-law, Marilyn Hunter. The loss will be felt most deeply by her children, Holly and Jesse, and her grandchildren, Silas and Everett.
Vicki was born in Winnipeg and lived in St. James all her life. She attended Linwood School and Deer Lodge Junior High before moving up to St. James Collegiate, where she met the love of her life, Carey. In 1987, at only 20 years old, Vicki married her high school sweetheart. The newlyweds made short work of growing their family, welcoming Holly and Jesse into the world. The family expanded to include three pets - Peaches, Belle, and Cookie - who were loved dearly. Vicki spent many years employed by Great West Life. She worked incredibly hard to give her children every opportunity in life.
Vicki’s world was rocked when, after almost 25 years of marriage, her beloved Carey received a devastating cancer diagnosis. She was Carey’s constant companion through it all. When Carey lost his battle, the grief Vicki felt was all-consuming and at times debilitating.
In time, Vicki went on to work at Family Foods and became a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, St. James Branch No. 4. At home, she enjoyed the companionship of her much-loved cats, Poopie and Meow Meow. When Vicki’s dad, Jim, needed more support as his health began to decline, she lovingly cared for him until the end. Soon after, Vicki’s own health began to fail. She fought to get better, but was taken from us, too young, at just 58 years of age.
The family would like to thank Vicki’s friends Norm and Brad, as well as the staff on the Palliative Care Unit at Riverview Health Centre, particularly nurses Jenn, Jordan, and Courtney, for the wonderful care they provided to her during her final chapter.
A celebration in honour of Vicki will be held at a later date.
